Writings, 1980–2026: from the Cowley shop floor to ecosocialism

Alan Thornett

Car worker, shop steward and revolutionary socialist. Thornett went into the car industry at Cowley in 1959, became a leading shop steward and deputy convenor in the Transport and General Workers' Union, and was sacked by British Leyland in 1982. He has written for the socialist press ever since: through the miners' strike and the defeats of the 1980s, the regroupment of the left, Scotland and Europe, and, in recent years, the ecological crisis.

Alan's most recent writing is on his blog, ecosocialistdiscussion.com. This site is the archive: 355 pieces from 1980–2026, gathered from the papers and magazines he wrote for.
